Meland golf course in Hordaland

I

t must be admitted that a set of golf clubs is not much use if you’re travelling up a fjord, which is the main attraction in Norway, plus the courses of which there are approximately 35 are only open half the year. But the winter-half is, like the rest of Scandinavia, becoming shorter as global warming creeps in.

But then you don’t find the keen Norwegian golfer huddled around a log fire in winter; the majority of them are brown and in shirt-sleeves and to be found on the fairways of the courses of Southern Spain. There are an estimated 120.000 Norwegian golfers and this number is increasing annually. If you are a summer visitor and driving through Norway and all it has to offer it is well worth taking your clubs.

The gulf-stream which impacts the west coast brings warmth between April and October and it is this side of the country between Oslo and Bergen where the best courses are to be found. Well worth a mention is Miklagard golf course, about 20 km outside Oslo. Set in delightful farming countryside its hilly terrain and lakes provide a pleasant test of golf and is a fine example of the work of Robert Trent Jones Jr.
